Tivoli Man Charged with Attempted Murder Following Rhinebeck Assault

On August 8, 2026, at approximately 10:21 a.m., New York State Police in Rhinebeck were dispatched to a private residence on James Street in Rhinebeck, New York, for a reported EMS assist. A family member had responded to the residence for a weekly visit and, upon arrival, located the 96-year-old victim lying in her bed with significant bruising to her head and face, as well as apparent blood loss. The victim was transported to Northern Dutchess Hospital for treatment.
A preliminary investigation by the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) in Rhinebeck determined that Max F. Klahr, 22, of Tivoli, New York, had gone to his grandmother’s residence on August 7, 2026, with the intention of spending the night. During the visit, a verbal argument ensued between Klahr and his grandmother. The investigation determined that Klahr became irate and physically assaulted the victim before leaving the residence and returning to his home.
Klahr was subsequently arrested and charged with the following:
Attempted Murder in the Second Degree – Depraved Indifference, a class B felony
Assault in the First Degree – Causing Serious Physical Injury Through Grave Risk of Death, a class B felony
Criminal Mischief in the Third Degree – Damaging Another Person’s Property in an Amount Greater Than $250, a class E felony
Criminal Obstruction of Breathing or Blood Circulation – Blocking the Nose or Mouth, a class A misdemeanor
Criminal Mischief in the Fourth Degree, a class A misdemeanor
Klahr was arraigned in the Town of Hyde Park Court and subsequently remanded to the Dutchess County Justice and Transition Center. He is scheduled to reappear in court on August 12, 2026, at 1:00 p.m.
This investigation remains ongoing.
