Traffic Stop Leads to Leandra’s Law Charges in Poughkeepsie NY

On August 9, 2026, at approximately 1:06 a.m., New York State Police in Wappinger conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle traveling westbound on Mill Street in the City of Poughkeepsie for a violation of the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law.
During the traffic stop, the operator, identified as Mauro E. Gonzalez Cante, 34, of Poughkeepsie, exhibited signs of intoxication. Standardized Field Sobriety Tests were administered. Further investigation revealed that two children, ages 10 and 13, were passengers in the vehicle.

Gonzalez Cante was taken into custody and transported to SP Wappinger for processing, where he submitted to a chemical breath test that yielded a blood alcohol concentration of 0.11%. The children were safely released to a sober third party.
As a result of the investigation, Gonzalez Cante was charged with:
Two counts of Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated with a Child Passenger- Leandra’s Law, a class E felony;
Driving While Intoxicated, an unclassified misdemeanor;
Operating a Motor Vehicle with 0.08% or More Alcohol in the Blood, first offense, an unclassified misdemeanor; and
New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law violations.
Gonzalez Cante was issued traffic tickets returnable to the City of Poughkeepsie Court on August 31, 2026, at 9:00 a.m.
