State Police investigate fatal collision in the town of Callicoon

On July 29, 2026, at approximately 7:00 a.m., troopers from State Police Liberty Barracks responded to the area of 572 North Branch Rd in the town of Callicoon for a report of a pickup truck half-submerged in the fast-moving water of the North Callicoon Creek.
The Investigation determined Jesus Arroyo Ortega, age 39, of Livingston Manor, NY, was operating the pickup truck on North Branch Rd when he was involved in a vehicle collision with a utility pole sometime during the morning hours of July 29, 2026. The New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation at Liberty responded to the scene, and Arroyo Ortega was recovered, over 2.6 miles downstream of the truck, deceased.
The investigation is ongoing.
The New York State Police were assisted at the scene by the North Branch Fire Department, the Hortonville Fire Department, the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office, and the New York State Forest Rangers.
