On October 28, 2026, at approximately 5:08 p.m., a New York State Trooper assigned to SP Wolcott conducted a traffic stop on Preemption Road, just south of State Route 104, in the town of Sodus, Wayne County, for vehicle and traffic violations.

During the traffic stop, a records check revealed that the operator had outstanding warrants for burglary and assault. A deputy from the Wayne County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene.

When the Trooper reapproached the vehicle and attempted to take the operator into custody, the operator refused to exit the vehicle and began driving forward while the Trooper was partially inside the vehicle. During the encounter, the operator produced a handgun and pointed it at the Trooper. The Trooper then discharged his division-issued firearm, striking the operator.

The operator was transported by Mercy Flight to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, where he is listed in critical but stable condition.

The Trooper was not injured during the incident.

The New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation are investigating the incident, with assistance from the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.

This was an isolated incident, and there is no ongoing threat to public safety.

The investigation remains active and ongoing. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
