Ghost plates? heard about them? Ghost Plates on cars are a rising problem for New Yorkers, where people will use a fake or purposely modify their plates to hide part of them or so the scanners don't pick them up on the highway.

Besides causing some to save money illegally via skipping tolls, it can also assist in other crimes, ranging from transporting stolen vehicles to street racing to some small degree.

NY is cracking down on it. The police seized 140 vehicles and issued 711 tickets recently. This is showing the state is fed up with it.

Here's a quote from a recent press release:

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that the New York State Police Troop T, in partnership with the New York State Thruway Authority, seized 140 vehicles and issued 711 tickets following three enforcement operations on the Thruway system in the Lower Hudson Valley and Western New York regions focusing on persistent toll violators and ghost plates. Drivers who were stopped and had their vehicles impounded owe nearly $125,000 in unpaid tolls and fees to the Thruway Authority. The Authority has since recovered $71,000, representing 57 percent of the total owed, from 20 vehicle owners.

Recently, even on a local level here in Central New York, we are encountering "vanish plates" or other devices that obscure people's license plates. This is a highly illegal device and carries significant penalties, including fines, points on your license, and even felony charges in some states, as it violates laws designed to prevent the evasion of law enforcement and tolls.

These devices are often sold for off-road or novelty use at car shows, but using them on public streets is a serious offense.
