Tractor trailer driver ticketed following rollover on I-81

Update: The operator of the tractor trailer is identified as Shavkat Mallaev, 60 of Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. Mallaev was issued one citation. 

Motorists traveling on I-81 were detoured through the village of Whitney Point, resulting in heavy traffic in the area.  The left lane of I-81 northbound reopened shortly after 6:00 p.m. 

Update: As 6 p.m., the left lane of Interstate 81 north is open near mile marker 22.1 in the town of Barker.  Crews are still on scene and using a portion of the right lane.  Please use caution in the area and slow down! Heavy traffic is still visible in the area. Original press release: Both northbound lanes of Interstate 81 in the town of Barker are closed, please find an alternate route. 

On July 27, 2026, at approximately 2:04 p.m., a Trooper from the Troop C Traffic Incident Management (TIM) unit responded to a tractor trailer that rolled across the roadway near mile marker 22.1 which is between exits 21 and 30 (old exits 7 and 8).  No other vehicles were struck.  The driver of the tractor trailer was evaluated on scene by medical personnel but did not wish to be transported to a local hospital. 

Members of the New York State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit are on scene inspecting the tractor trailer. 

The northbound lanes will remain closed until the vehicle is able to be removed from the roadway.
