Impaired wrong-way driver on Thruway arrested after multi-vehicle crash in White Plains

On October 15, 2026, members of New York State Police Troop T, SP New Rochelle, arrested Robert Daniel Mack, 49, of White Plains, for aggravated DWI, reckless driving, reckless endangerment-2nd degree, and multiple vehicle and traffic law violations.
On October 15 shortly after 4:30 a.m., a State Police trooper traveling eastbound in the left lane of Interstate I-287 in the town of Harrison encountered a vehicle traveling westbound directly toward the patrol vehicle at a high rate of speed. The trooper took evasive action to avoid a head-on collision, then exited the highway and entered the westbound lanes to attempt to locate the wrong-way vehicle.
The wrong-way vehicle, a 2026 Toyota Corona operated by Mack, subsequently struck a 2019 Ford Taurus and a 2022 Cadillac Escalade before coming to a stop after colliding with the center median.
Both drivers of the impacted vehicles were evaluated by EMS at the scene and transported to Westchester Medical Center with minor injuries.
Mack, who did not have any reported injuries, was administered standardized field sobriety tests, which he failed. He was transported to SP Tarrytown for processing, where he registered a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.18%, more than twice the legal limit.
Mack was released to a sober third party and is due in White Plains City Court on November 5.
The New York State Police have responded to nearly 2,000 DWI-related collisions statewide to date in 2026. The State Police urge drivers to use the STOP-DWI Have a Plan app to help get home safely. The free app allows users to contact a taxi service or ride share, program a designated-driver list, or report a suspected impaired driver.
