Rome Woman Arrested After Surviving Train Incident — Sheriff Issues Railroad Safety Warning

Update on Train/Pedestrian Incident in Rome

According to Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol, on March 19, 2025, Patrol Deputies located and arrested Tanya Larsen, age 49, of Rome, in connection with the train/pedestrian accident that occurred on March 10, 2025, on the CSX Railway in the City of Rome. Larsen was arrested without incident, transported to the Sheriff's Office for processing, and released on an appearance ticket returnable to Rome City Court. She is charged with Criminal Trespass in the 3rd degree, a Class B misdemeanor.

The public is reminded that it is a criminal offense to be on railroad property or the right-of-way.

Incident Overview

At approximately 3:50 PM on March 10, 2025, Road Patrol Deputies responded to a train/pedestrian accident on the CSX Railroad in the City of Rome. The incident occurred between the Rome Train Station on Martin Street and the Route 49 overpass from East Dominick Street.

Initial investigations revealed that an adult woman was walking on the train tracks when a passing Amtrak passenger train hooked onto her backpack. As a result, the woman was dragged alongside the train and tracks for a short distance until her backpack ripped, freeing her. She was subsequently taken to Wynn Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Being on railroad property or within the right-of-way is a criminal offense. The Oneida County Sheriff's Office emphasizes the importance of adhering to railroad safety regulations to prevent accidents and ensure public safety.

The Oneida County Sheriff’s Road Patrol was assisted on the scene by AmCare Ambulance, the Rome Fire Department, Rome Police, New York State Police, and members of CSX.
