State Police Investigate Death at Collins Correctional Facility

On July 21, 2026, at about 11:00 p.m., the NYS Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) notified the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation of an altercation at Collins Correctional Facility that resulted in the death of an incarcerated individual.

The preliminary investigation revealed that an incarcerated individual attacked a second incarcerated individual in a Residential Rehabilitation Unit (RRU), resulting in serious physical injury. The incarcerated victim was sent to Bertrand Chaffee Hospital and pronounced deceased after life-saving measures were taken. The victim has been identified as Jose R. Aponte, age 34.

The NYS Department of Corrections and Community Supervision Office of Special Investigations is assisting with this case. The NYS Attorney General’s Office was notified and responded to the scene. 

This is an ongoing criminal investigation.
