Four Subway Jumpers in Less Than 24 Hours Shake NYC Transit
In a grim stretch for New York City’s subway system, four people are believed to have jumped in front of trains in less than 24 hours, causing major delays and sparking concern among commuters and officials.
The latest incident occurred Thursday afternoon when an unidentified person leaped in front of a Queens-bound No. 7 train at the 103rd St. Station in Corona just after 2:30 p.m. This came barely an hour after another individual was struck by an uptown No. 1 train at the 191st St. Station in Washington Heights. Fortunately, the second victim survived and was rushed to a nearby hospital, according to transit sources.
The tragic pattern began Wednesday night, with two other individuals reportedly taking their own lives by jumping in front of trains. One person was killed at the 96th St. Station on the No. 2 line around 7:30 p.m., just under an hour after another fatal incident at the 207th St. Station on the No. 1 line.
The NYPD confirmed that no criminality was suspected in any of the cases. The incidents have sparked renewed discussions about subway safety and mental health awareness as the city grapples with ways to prevent such tragedies.
