Governor Kathy Hochul is encouraging New Yorkers to step outside and enjoy nature with the announcement of six Free Fishing Days in 2025. On these days, the fishing license requirement will be waived for freshwater fishing on New York's waters, giving residents and visitors an affordable opportunity to explore the state's top-notch fishing spots. The Free Fishing Days are:
February 15-16 (Presidents' Day Weekend)
June 28-29
September 27 (National Hunting and Fishing Day)
November 11 (Veterans Day)
“Free Fishing Days are a great way to experience the beauty of New York’s lakes, rivers, and streams,” Governor Hochul said. “Fishing brings families together, boosts tourism, and supports the economy.”
To make fishing even more accessible, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has partnered with libraries across the state to offer a free fishing rod lending program. Library patrons can check out a fishing rod, giving them the chance to try the sport without the need to buy equipment. Visit the DEC website for more information and a list of participating libraries.
DEC Interim Commissioner Sean Mahar highlighted that Free Fishing Days are a perfect chance for anyone to try fishing, whether for the first time or as a way to reconnect with nature. Fishing not only provides fun and relaxation but also contributes to mental health and wellness.
The program, which began in 1991, encourages people to experience fishing and support conservation efforts by purchasing a fishing license. While the fishing license requirement is waived, all other regulations remain in effect.
For those new to fishing, the DEC offers resources like the I FISH NY Beginners' Guide to Freshwater Fishing, a helpful video series on YouTube, and the HuntFishNY app for fishing regulations, boating access, and stocking information.
In addition to Free Fishing Days, DEC also offers learn-to-fish clinics, and ice anglers are reminded to check ice thickness for safety. The Department of Health also provides guidance on safe fish consumption.
Whether you're a seasoned angler or trying fishing for the first time, Free Fishing Days are a great way to get outside, enjoy New York's beautiful waters, and support conservation efforts!
