At 83 years old, Iggy Falcone proved that age is no barrier to victory, powering his 1965 Pontiac GTO to the New York State Super Pro Division Championship on Sunday at the Summit ET Racing Series hosted at Esta Safety Park Dragstrip in Cicero.

Falcone battled through seven grueling rounds of elimination racing to claim the $1,500 first-place prize and the coveted Wally trophy, drag racing’s most prestigious award. The win adds to his storied career, which already includes a 2005 state championship title.

The championship final came down to a dramatic double breakout showdown with Mike Scribani. Scribani left the line first with a sharp .010 reaction time, but pushed too hard and broke out with a 6.965 on a 6.98 dial at 97.57 mph. Falcone, steady and precise, sealed the championship with a 6.379 on his 6.38 dial at 107.15 mph.

For Falcone, the moment was more than just another win.

“I’ve raced all my life since I was 16. I started racing the ‘65 Pontiac in the 1980s,” he said. “I won the state championship 20 years ago, and to win this now at my age is pretty hard. This is a big, big race. To win the Wally is priceless.”

His path to the title included close calls. In Round 3, Kelly Pope cut a perfect .000 light, only to break out against Falcone’s .006-over run. In the semifinals, Falcone advanced when Vince Musolino fouled on the start, setting up the championship clash with Scribani.

With Sunday’s victory, Falcone not only added another championship to his name but also reminded the racing world that experience, skill, and determination can still outlast time.
