White House Unveils $5 Billion Expansion of Genesis Mission to Accelerate AI-Driven Scientific Discovery

WASHINGTON, D.C. — July 22, 2026 — The Trump Administration announced a sweeping expansion of its Genesis Mission, committing more than $5 billion in new federal investments to accelerate scientific research through artificial intelligence. The initiative, unveiled by Assistant to the President and Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Michael Kratsios, broadens what began as a Department of Energy program into a government-wide effort involving more than 15 federal agencies.

The announcement was made ahead of the Genesis Mission 2026 Summit, where officials outlined a vision of using AI, advanced computing, and shared scientific data to dramatically shorten the time required for medical breakthroughs, infrastructure innovation, energy development, manufacturing advances, and national security research.

A Whole-of-Government AI Strategy

Originally launched by President Donald Trump's Executive Order in November 2025, the Genesis Mission is designed to harness artificial intelligence as a foundational scientific research tool.

Central to the initiative is the American Science and Security Platform, developed by the Department of Energy. The platform provides researchers with access to high-performance computing, AI tools, specialized scientific datasets, and collaborative research infrastructure intended to accelerate discovery across disciplines.

"America's greatest scientific achievements have been born of national mobilizations paired with the construction of new institutions," Kratsios said. "The Genesis Mission is the next chapter in that tradition."

The expanded initiative brings together agencies including the Departments of Energy, Health and Human Services, Defense (referred to in the announcement as the Department of War), Transportation, Agriculture, Interior, Veterans Affairs, Homeland Security, NASA, the National Science Foundation, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the Environmental Protection Agency, and others.

Health Research Becomes a Primary Focus

Healthcare represents one of the largest priorities within the Genesis Mission.

Officials announced several major AI-driven biomedical initiatives designed to improve disease detection and accelerate treatment development.

Among the most significant projects are efforts to:

  • Identify the root causes of chronic diseases by combining decades of federal health records, environmental monitoring, and biological research.

  • Expand pediatric cancer research using AI trained across hundreds of rare childhood cancer subtypes.

  • Accelerate drug discovery by integrating genomic, molecular, clinical, and real-world patient data.

  • Improve preventive healthcare for veterans through AI analysis of electronic health records and genomic information.

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said the initiative would help "mobilize the nation's best researchers to uncover the root causes of chronic disease."

National Institutes of Health Director Dr. Jay Bhattacharya added that AI could dramatically shorten the timeline between scientific discovery and patient treatment while maintaining rigorous scientific standards.

Modernizing Infrastructure and Energy

The Genesis Mission also aims to modernize America's infrastructure through AI-powered digital twins and predictive modeling.

New federal collaborations will focus on:

  • Designing longer-lasting roads, bridges, and buildings.

  • Improving predictive maintenance for transportation systems.

  • Increasing electrical grid reliability.

  • Enhancing energy affordability through AI-assisted grid management.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy described the initiative as another step toward improving travel experiences and strengthening national supply chains.

Meanwhile, the Department of the Interior will integrate data related to water resources, critical minerals, biological systems, and energy development to improve conservation efforts while supporting domestic resource production.

Manufacturing and Industrial Innovation

Manufacturing represents another major investment area.

Federal agencies plan to use AI to accelerate semiconductor research, restore U.S. leadership in microelectronics, expand industrial biotechnology, and modernize defense manufacturing.

Among the announced projects:

  • AI-assisted semiconductor design beyond Moore's Law.

  • Commercial-scale biological manufacturing.

  • Faster design and certification of conventional and nuclear weapons components.

  • Advanced materials research supporting national security.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright noted that 278 projects were selected during the first round of Genesis Mission funding, reflecting what he described as exceptionally strong interest from the nation's research community.

Space, Quantum Computing, and Autonomous Laboratories

NASA and the Department of Energy will jointly analyze more than 150 petabytes of scientific data collected from telescopes, satellites, landers, and orbiters using AI models capable of identifying new discoveries in astronomy, Earth science, and space exploration.

Additional initiatives include:

  • Autonomous AI-driven laboratories capable of conducting and replicating experiments with minimal human intervention.

  • AI-assisted development of fault-tolerant quantum computers.

  • Physics-informed materials discovery.

  • Predictive biological modeling linking genes, proteins, and living systems.

Officials say these technologies could fundamentally change how scientific research is performed over the coming decade.

National Security Applications

The Genesis Mission also includes several national security initiatives.

Federal agencies will use AI to improve:

  • Detection of emerging biological threats.

  • Nuclear materials attribution.

  • Strategic materials qualification.

  • Development of next-generation defense technologies.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Department of Homeland Security, Department of Energy, National Nuclear Security Administration, Department of Agriculture, and National Institute of Standards and Technology will collaborate on biological threat detection systems that integrate genomic, environmental, clinical, and open-source information.

A New Model for American Science

Administration officials argue that artificial intelligence has reached a point where it can fundamentally transform scientific research in much the same way that supercomputing reshaped science decades ago.

Rather than operating independently, participating agencies will share computing resources, scientific datasets, AI infrastructure, and research expertise through the American Science and Security Platform.

Officials say this collaborative approach is intended to dramatically increase the pace of scientific discovery while reducing duplication across federal research programs.

The Genesis Mission also aligns with Kratsios' newly released report, Science: A New Golden Age, which calls for expanding AI-enabled research infrastructure and doubling America's research and development output.

Looking Ahead

The White House said today's announcement represents only the federal component of the Genesis Mission. Additional partnerships involving private industry, philanthropic organizations, and international collaborators are expected to be announced in the coming months.

With more than $5 billion in new commitments, participation from over 15 federal agencies, and nearly 300 initial research projects underway, the Administration is positioning the Genesis Mission as one of the largest AI-enabled scientific initiatives ever undertaken by the U.S. government.
