Cortland man charged with reckless driving, driving while ability impaired

On July 23, 2026, around 9:30 p.m., a Trooper observed a 2005 Honda Accord traveling on State Route 281 in the town of Preble traveling at double the speed limit then increased its speed. The Trooper initiated a traffic stop, and the vehicle came to a stop at the Mirabito gas station.
The operator, who was later identified as Dylan J. Stevens, 25, of Homer, immediately exited his vehicle and approached the Trooper’s patrol vehicle. The Trooper smelled an odor of an alcoholic beverage and observed characteristics associated with impairment. Stevens was asked to perform Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, which confirmed impairment and he was arrested.
The Trooper additionally located suspected cocaine in Stevens’s possession and that his driver’s license is suspended. A female passenger in the vehicle who was not impaired and held a valid driver’s license released from the scene with the vehicle.
Stevens was charged with Driving While Ability Impaired (combined influence of alcohol and drugs), Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 7th degree and Reckless Driving, all misdemeanors. He was additionally issued traffic citations. He was transported to SP Homer for processing and issued appearance tickets returnable to the Preble Town Court on August 11, 2026.
