Governor Kathy Hochul has announced that 15 individuals have been placed on leave following the death of 22-year-old Messiah Nantwi, an incarcerated individual at Mid-State Correctional Facility. While the investigation is still ongoing, early reports suggest deeply troubling circumstances surrounding Nantwi’s death, prompting swift action from state officials.

"I am committed to accountability for all involved," Governor Hochul stated. "The people of New York extend our deepest condolences to Mr. Nantwi’s family and loved ones."

Calls for Systemic Change in Corrections

Governor Hochul emphasized that this tragic incident underscores the urgent need for systemic reform within New York’s correctional system. She highlighted past reforms implemented after the murder of Robert Brooks, including:

Mandatory body-worn cameras for transparency.

Expanded whistleblower hotlines for reporting misconduct.

Outside experts conducting a full systemwide culture review.

Ongoing Correctional Crisis & Work Stoppage

In addition to the Nantwi investigation, Hochul addressed the ongoing illegal work stoppage among Correction Officers, warning that it poses a major safety risk to staff, National Guard personnel, and incarcerated individuals.

"My top priority is the safety and well-being of everyone in the correctional system," Hochul said. "We are committed to working with Correction Officers to improve safety and conditions, but law and order must be upheld inside our facilities."

As the investigation into Messiah Nantwi’s death continues, the Governor is making it clear: accountability, reform, and safety are at the forefront of her administration’s approach to New York’s correctional system.
